No, Iva Toguri doesn’t have an e-mail account—yet. Currently, she only has the conventional mail, phone and fax with which she is familiar and comfortable. Sadly, she still has to maintain unlisted numbers and screen all incoming messages—the price of celebrity in general and notoriety in particular. Although I’ve always relayed via conventional mail printouts of e-mails about her sent to me from this page, it never occurred to me that I could use the “Orphan Ann” Home Page as a mailbox for Iva herself.

Then, shortly after New Year 2001, a visitor to this site e-mailed me the following question:

“If more people were to learn of Iva’s story … and were encouraged to write a note to her … through you … could it not be the kind of apology that Iva could ‘feel’ more than legislative action … which we all know seems to work faster ‘posthumously’ (if at all) than when the person is still with us?”

The answer is a resounding “Yes!” and so began this section of the “Orphan Ann” Home Page, from whence you can write a message directly to Iva.

• Click this link: Write to Iva Toguri!

Either action should open a new message in your e-mail program, automatically addressed to Iva via Dyar Straights with ‘Orphan Ann’ Home Page as the Subject. All mail sent to this address is filtered into a separate mailbox, the contents of which will be printed and relayed to Iva via conventional mail at regular intervals. If the auto-address routine doesn’t work, you can enter the same information manually and get the same result.
